Corporate reputation and communications management

Gregory Hartl, communications advisor, World Health Organisation (from 1.00 onwards)

What you say when communicating about risk is of course important. But every other element of the communication mix must harmonise with your words if messages are to be successfully delivered. Notice how the background to Gregory Hartl’s interview is distracting and how this is further exacerbated by his excessive movement. Be aware also that the public expects commentators to demonstrate through their own behaviour that they are taking health issues seriously: Mr Hart’s clothing and manner was seen to be too casual by many people. Finally, avoid jargon at all costs or else risk misunderstandings: Mr Hartl’s use of the word ‘event’ to describe outbreaks of the disease caused confusion among many viewers.
